    Alternative to valtrex

I have been living with HSV Type II for more than 25 years and it has been, by and large, under control just by applying Acyclovir skin cream. About a year ago, I was asked to go on a Acivir regime to supress herpes outburst because treatment of my other disease would have reduced immunity and doctor wanted to avoid any complications. However, within couple days starting the oral acivir medicines, I developed severe allergic reaction to it. There were red patches all over the body and they were very itchy. Considering the reaction, doctor advised me to stop the medication and it was back to normal within couple of days. This time I was put on Valrex regime, but the same reaction and the same outcome. My questions: (a) Is there a real alternative to both Valtrex and Acyclovir, if not (b) Is there know specific medicine that helps in countering the side-effects I expereinced. Early response will be highly appreciated as I am still going through the treatment and don't want HSV to come in the way. I have tried taking Valtrex during an outbreak with the hopes of taking it long-term for suppressive therapy. But both times, I've gotten terrible side effects like nausea, headache, fatigue, dizziness/trouble concentrating. The side effects made me unable to work which unfortunately is worse than herpes symptoms themselves. My doctor said these side effects are possible but unusual and that maybe it's some inactive ingredient in the medicine and that I could try taking acyclovir instead to see if that helps without the side effects. Wondering about other people's experience with side effects (maybe they subside eventually so worth it to suffer through them initially) with Valtrex and/or acyclovir and wondering if there are other options for suppressive therapy. most of the time the side effects go away in 1-2 weeks when taking the medication suppressively. give the acyclovir a try - you get less active acyclovir with plain acyclovir so you might have less side effects. grace My 29 year old daughter had a severe and frightening reaction to Valtrex. She had cold sores and began taking 500 mg Valtrex, per script.

I am allergic to antiviral drugs like valacyclovir (gives me a horrible rash), so I was forced to research natural / homeopathic alternatives. I found a ton of research on Pub Med / NCBI on a medium chain fatty acid called Monolaurin which comes from coconut. The research suggests that monolaurin can kill HSV in-vitro so I begin a therapeutic dose of Natural Cure Labs brand monolaurin around 6 months ago and have not had a breakout since. I felt I was being a hypochondriac, but deep down I was afraid it was a serious virus or cancer. She was baffled, gave me a script for Valtrex although we both agreed it didn't look or act like a cold sore. I have a follow up this week and I'm going to ask her for a referral to a dermatologist. I am curious about alternatives to Valtrex or Acyclovir for Suppressive Treatment. I hadn't considered suppressive treatment until recently when my outbreaks seem to be much more frequent, 1 a month. My outbreaks are very mild, but certainly a nuisance. Coincidentally, just when I need to take something to suppress outbreaks, I lose my insurance. I priced Valtrex at $135 a month, didn't know about Acyclovir until I read posts on this site. I would really like to take something more natural and less expensive. I started taking L Lysine 2 days ago, we'll see how that goes.
